Use Psychology to Distance Your Agency From Competitors

The agency space is packed. While you’re “heads down” in operations, your competitors are taking steps to best you. It’s stressful to juggle your day-to-day while looking over your shoulder. 

And guess what? 

If you pay too much attention to your competitors — and not enough on your agency — you’ll begin to lose ground. 

That’s a concern. A big concern. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Instead, there’s a solution: crafting value-driven offers that spotlight benefits over features.

Leverage The Psychology Behind Purchases

I’m no psychologist, but I do know how to leverage the psychology behind why consumers make a purchase. And if you master that, you also master the ability to accelerate your agency’s growth.

So, how do you do that?

It’s simple. Start by forgetting about the services you offer. Instead, turn your attention to the tangible benefits these services bring to your clients.

Agencies often mistake adding more services for adding value. However, real value lies in addressing the gap between a client's current state and their aspirational future. 

By positioning your services as the bridge to their desired outcome, you create a compelling reason for clients to choose you over others.

There’s a lot you can do from a psychological perspective — and we’ll talk about that down the road — but for now, let’s focus on three strategies:

Niche understanding: Deeply understand your target market's unique challenges and aspirations. With this, you can tailor your offerings to speak directly to their needs.

Prompt: What are the biggest pain points that your ideal client will be dealing with? What keeps them up at night?

Result-oriented offers: Highlighting the result of your services differentiates you from competitors stuck on selling features. You gain an immediate leg-up. 

Prompt: What are the results that you can achieve for a potential partner that solve that big, ugly pain point? Get specific.

Simplicity and predictability: Simplify your services to focus on those that deliver the most value. Predictable, streamlined processes appeal to clients seeking reliable solutions.

Prompt: What are the ways that you can simplify your offer so that it provides the most efficient journey from pain point -> result?

ACTION ITEM: Answer the above prompts and respond to this email with what you come up with. I’ll be happy to give you some feedback!

The above advice will help you pinpoint a value-driven offer and operationalize it for consistency and scalability.
